Soul Food Rertreat
by Sister Mildred Slabenak, OSB
The retreat of June 18-22, 2007, conducted by Sister
Ephrem Hollermann, OSB, who came from St. Joseph, Minnesota, rekindled the zeal
for the common teaching in the Rule of St. Benedict.
Sister Ephrem’s presentations on “Perspectives on the
Theology and Spirituality of Monastic Profession” were savory and spiced
with topics such as: “The Goal of Life” according to Benedict, his
“Basic Assumptions”, the “Process” and “Discipline of
Spirituality.”
The pace of activities was set and the reactions to them
were met with a happy, enthusiastic attitude. The inspiration of new thoughts
and ideas was the salt and pepper that enlivened the spirit within each who
attended. It was a time of grace and fulfillment. Eagerness to embrace religious
life more intensely through study, prayer and meditation resulted.
Climaxing the event was the celebration of the Eucharist,
the Bread of Life, and the renewal of the Monastic Profession. The strains of
the “Suscipe” (Receive me, O Lord) resonated throughout the chapel. Once again
promises were renewed.
As the retreat came to a successful end, grace-filled and
spiritually well-fed souls sang songs of thanksgiving.
