OVER 15 CENTURIES OF BENEDICTINE MONASTICS!

Return to Welcome Page

Benedictinism was founded in Rome over 15 centuries ago by St. Benedict and his twin sister St. Scholastica. The first Benedictine Sisters came to America from St. Walburga Abbey in Eichstatt, Bavaria in 1852 to St. Mary's in Carrolltown, Pennsylvania. Today there are approximately 60 independent  monasteries of women in the USA, Bahamas,Canada and Mexico.

A portrait of Mother Mary Nepomucene Jaeger
foundress of Sacred Heart Monastery.
She first established our community in Chicago in
1895 and then was able to erect a new monastery
in the scenic surroundings of Lisle in 1912.

A sculpture of St. Benedict and Saint
Scholastica by Helen E. Norman.
It depicts the last visit of the two founders
before the death of Saint Scholastica.
The sculptress gave the two saints the
facial features of the foundress of Sacred Heart
and her blood brother Abbot Nepomucene,
founder of St. Procopius Abbey.

The archives contain the records of the history of the Benedictine Sisters from its founding to its present day.  The centennial in 1995 was the occasion of an extensive review of the ministries and accomplishments of the members of the community. The archivist, Sister Celine, has created a display of historical pictures and artifacts.
