Sisters Afra & Beatrice, OSB

Return to Welcome Page

In 2004, we had the joy of welcoming and Sister Beatrice Kayomba, OSB (right) and   Sister Afra Mgwama, OSB (right) to our community.  Both Sisters studied English and are furthering their studies at Benedictine University.  The Sisters are members of St. Gertrude’s Monastery in Imiliwaha, of the diocese of Njombe in Tanzania.  The monastic ministries of St. Gertrude extend to serving others as teachers, workers in hospitals and orphanages.  Their monastery is located in the southern highlands of Tanzania and is a foundation of St. Agnes Monastery in Songea.
It is a real delight to have these two Sisters with us knowing they are part of  our vast Benedictine Order.  Each comes with the enthusiasm and energy of a young Benedictine eager to learn more to bring back to her community and people.

Sister Afra Mgwama comes from a family of eight children and lived in the village of Lupembe.  Her mother and father both tend a farm for their livelihood.   Sister attended high school   Sister Afra wishes to get a degree in Education and teach in Tanzania

Sister Beatrice Kayombo comes from a family of twelve children and lived in the village of Ludewa.  Her mother and father also tend a farm for their livelihood.   While attending high school and helping in a medical dispensary, she showed great interest in medicine so her superiors sent her to nursing school for four years.  Sister Beatrice hopes to continue her studies in medicine.
